Diabetic smokers multiply the risk of suffering from severe periodontal disease by 20

According to the Spanish Diabetes Association, one in seven adults in our country suffers from this disease. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the General Council of Dentists wanted to highlight the bidirectional relationship that exists between this disease and oral health.

Madrid, November 4, 2024. The General Council of Dentists today launches its 6th Oral Cancer Campaign, an initiative to which nearly 800 dental clinics throughout Spain have joined. It has also had the collaboration of the Spanish Society of Oral Medicine (SEMO), the Spanish Society of Oral Surgery (SECIB) and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).

The aim of this initiative is to make the population aware of the process involved in correctly and safely carrying out orthodontic treatment with aligners, as well as the health risks involved in purchasing them online without the diagnosis and supervision of a dentist.

The group of patients with the highest risk of suffering dental trauma are males between 8 and 10 years old.

Patient groups at highest risk for dental trauma are males between 8 and 10 years of age. Other at-risk patient groups include those with a larger overjet, an incompetent lip seal, a history of previous trauma, and those who play contact sports.
