4.5 million Spaniards have suffered some type of dental trauma
The summer season is one of the times of the year where more injuries usually occur, in most cases, due to falls, collisions, accidents, sports practice or recreational activities. The General Council of Dentists reminds that all dental injuries should be considered an emergency and you should go to the dentist as soon as possible.

It is estimated that some 4.5 million Spaniards have suffered some type of dental trauma, which would place the global prevalence at 10%. Likewise, epidemiological studies show that 25% of adolescents experience dental trauma. The maxillary central incisors are usually the most affected teeth. Dental and facial injuries can be significantly reduced by introducing protective equipment, such as face and mouth guards, during contact sports.

Long-term sequelae of traumatic injuries can affect well-being, speech, the need for complex care, and oral health-related quality of life. In addition, certain types of trauma, such as dental avulsion (complete removal of the tooth from its socket), have a poor survival prognosis for the affected tooth.

In the event of any dental trauma, the General Council of Dentists recommends going to the dentist quickly to avoid further damage and following a series of tips:

  • Wounds or bruises in the mouth can affect the lip, tongue or mucous membranes. After the impact, the area should be washed and disinfected, as well as checking the condition of the teeth and bone.
  • In the case of dislocations, the blow displaces the tooth from its alveolus causing it to move, although without expelling it completely. It is important not to use a mouthwash or touch the tooth.
  • If the trauma has broken a piece of the tooth, it is necessary to ensure that the nerve is not damaged. In these circumstances, it is recommended that the broken tooth fragment be retrieved and preserved in saline, water, or milk. If the trauma has been so strong that it has expelled the tooth completely, it should be recovered by holding it by the crown (never by the root), do not clean it, or rinse it, and go immediately to the dentist.
