Meeting between dentists and technicians against the industrial manufacture of dental aligners
The proliferation of companies that advertise and sell invisible orthodontic treatments to the public through their websites and social networks is giving rise to the possibility of these aligners being manufactured in an industrialized way.

To address this problem, which affects both the dental profession and patients, a meeting was held between the president of the General Council of Dentists, Dr. Óscar Castro Reino; the president of the College of Dentists and Stomatologists of Catalonia (COEC), Dr. German Pareja Pané; and the president and secretary of the Official College of Dental Technicians of Catalonia, Josep Montero i Pelegrí and Josep M. Fonollosa Pla.

The three institutions explain that, according to the legislation, dental aligners are health products that must be made to measure and not in an industrialized way, since they depend on the treatment that each patient requires, according to the diagnosis made by the dentist after studying the mouth. of the same (anamnesis, intraoral, functional and extraoral examination, radiographs, impressions, etc.). "Orthodontics must be prescribed by a doctor and manufactured in a duly authorized dental prosthesis laboratory, and not in series," says Josep Montero.

For his part, Dr. Pareja adds that "dentists and prosthetists row together in the same direction and in favor of the dental profession, to fight against initiatives that try to market health products outside of Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics and that can affect the patient's health. It is important to highlight that using these dental aligners without the prescription and supervision of a dentist poses a serious health risk.

Dr. Castro also insists that, in addition, some of these companies could violate, among others, certain precepts of our legislation referring to the prohibition of sales by mail order and by telematic procedures of health products subject to prescription, as well as the prohibition to carry out advertising to the public of health products that are intended to be used or applied exclusively by health professionals. Finally, he highlights that the Council, the COEC and the College of Prosthetics of Catalonia work together to deal with this and all the problems that affect the dental profession and the oral health of the population.
