The prevention and care of the teeth is the main tool to avoid oral diseases

Dentistry and the importance of oral health

The health of the mouth and teeth is essential for the well-being of each person. In this sense, the work of dentists consists of guaranteeing it and solving the inconveniences that may arise in this sector of the human body.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 3.5 billion people suffer from oral diseases.

In line with this, the body indicates that:

  • At least 530 million children suffer from cavities in their baby teeth.
  • Severe periodontitis affects 10% of the world's population.
  • Untreated tooth decay in permanent teeth is the world's largest health disorder in terms of number of cases

On the other hand, the WHO also emphasizes what oral health implies at the social level. In this regard, it expresses that dental treatments are expensive and that, in general, they are not part of what is known as “universal health coverage” (UHC).

How to prevent oral disorders

Most oral health disorders are preventable. In this sense, it can be stated that there are a series of actions and recommendations that must be taken into account:

  • Brush your teeth 2 to 3 times a day (ideally after every meal).
  • Use dental floss to clean the space between the teeth.
  • Do not abuse sweets and foods rich in sugar.
  • Avoid tobacco and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.
  • Keep in mind that the use of swish is positive but that it does not replace brushing.

For the rest, it is advisable to visit the dentist at least once every 6 months to carry out the corresponding controls and, if necessary, treat a disorder in its initial stage.
