What is dental plaque?

Dental plaque is a sticky, colorless to light yellow film that forms regularly on teeth. When saliva, food, and liquids combine, plaque (which contains bacteria) forms between the teeth and along the gum line.

Dental plaque begins to form on the teeth 4 to 12 hours after brushing, so it is very important to brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day and floss daily.

How does dental plaque affect my oral health?

Plaque is the main cause of many oral health problems. Plaque bacteria produce acids that attack tooth enamel and cause cavities. These bacteria can also cause the early phase of periodontal disease called gingivitis. Plaque can also cause bad breath and make teeth look dirty and yellow.

If dental plaque is not removed regularly with proper brushing and flossing, it mineralizes and turns into tartar, a hardened yellow to brown deposit that sticks firmly to the teeth and can only be removed a dental professional. If the tartar is not removed, it can cause more serious periodontal disease.

Fighting plaque is the single most important factor in protecting and preserving your teeth and gums throughout life.
