We remember this on World Oral Health Day, whose motto is "Healthy and wise mouth all life"
"We should never go to miracle products to treat our teeth, but go to the dentist periodically and whenever we have a problem or doubt."
Emphasize the importance of adopting good oral hygiene habits from pregnancy and regular dental check-ups "because this helps to maintain optimum oral health, guaranteeing more years of life free of complications". Policymakers are also urged to recognize that oral health is a major pillar of general well-being and a fundamental human right, to implement oral health promotion strategies among the population, and to prioritize monitoring, control and evaluation Of oral diseases.
In this sense, he explained that "there is a great impact between periodontal diseases and acute myocardial infarction, so cardiologists and dentists should generate joint action protocols to address and prevent this problem."
Oral health and pregnancy
It is essential for a woman to go to the dentist during pregnancy, since the oral health of the mother influences the overall health of the baby. At this stage, gingivitis and gingival hypertrophy are frequent, and one in three pregnant women has at least one untreated caries. However, it only goes to the dentist of 6-9% of pregnant women. During gestation, the woman should brush her teeth and take care of her mouth. In addition, it is preferable to take fresh fruit instead of industrial juices and both sugary foods and carbonated beverages should be limited. If the woman experiences nausea and vomiting, it is advisable to use a fluoride mouthwash daily and rinse the mouth with water after each vomiting.
Oral health and early childhood
Parents should take care of the oral hygiene of their children since they are babies. Around the 6 months begin to appear the first temporary teeth and it is advisable that the parents clean them with a pediatric brush. At one year of life the child should be taken to the dentist for first oral control and periodically attending the check-ups. From the age of two you can put fluoride toothpaste but with an amount like a pea. At least two brushings a day, one in the morning and one at night.
Oral health in children and adolescents
In Spain, 4 out of 10 children under 15 have cavities. It is at this stage, between 6 and 12 years, when it is essential to strengthen hygiene and care for food, as it is when the permanent dentition is completed. The brushing of the teeth has to be done twice a day with a quantity of fluorinated toothpaste equivalent to a chickpea and for 2 minutes.
Oral health in the young adult
Only half of young Spanish adults have visited their dentist in the last year, even though, from the age of 30, not only attention must be paid to cavities, but also to periodontal diseases. They usually begin as a simple gingivitis or tartar accumulation that can sometimes evolve into a loss of bone surrounding the teeth. They are processes that do not hurt, so you have to go to the dentist to detect them early.
Oral health in the elderly
On average, each older Spanish adult has 16 teeth affected by caries, of which 12 have been extracted. In fact, at this stage of life many changes occur in the oral cavity that can lead to health problems. For example, the decrease in saliva can increase oral diseases and the gums tend to retract, leaving the roots exposed to an increased risk of caries and periodontal pathologies. Also, at these ages increases the risk of oral cancer, so the dentist should indicate how to do a self-exploration of the mouth.
