¿Uso del hilo dental?

Is dental floss good or bad for your teeth?
Until now, it has not been possible to demonstrate the effectiveness of dental floss.

The Associated Press (AP) examined the studies that elevated dental floss. The findings determined that the tests were weak and unreliable and that the studies had not been done long enough, so to date they could not prove that flossing was beneficial.

In order to demonstrate its effectiveness, both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology, both entities specializing in gums and dental implants, cited several studies as evidence that dental floss prevents the accumulation of tartar, gingivitis or inflammation. of the gums, in addition to decay. However, most of these studies used non-continuous methods over time or tested a few people.

And so on until today. Therefore, it is normal to ask if the dental floss is really good, bad or, directly, unusable. Do we really need this tool to maintain good oral health? The answer is yes.

It is a key step in the oral health routine. "Not only keeps your smile with the best appearance, but it is essential to maintain your general oral health and prevent tooth decay," he says. "Flossing daily is very effective in eliminating plaque buildup in hard-to-reach areas that can cause tooth decay, and it also eliminates excess food particles that can get trapped in your toothbrush," he adds.

An idea shared by June Harewood, dentist and dental professor at Columbia University. "Many people feel an aversion to flossing, but there is too much evidence to support the additional benefits of combining it with traditional brushing."

Good for the gums
Flossing is also a good way to reduce the risk of gingivitis, a gum disease that usually causes bad breath. It is one of the most common gum diseases (in Spain about 60% of adults suffer, according to the Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration) which results in irritation and swelling and possible bleeding of the affected area.

Not only does it keep your smile looking its best, it also maintains your overall oral health and prevents tooth decay

"Although it sounds frightening to some people, gingivitis is treatable and preventable with a good oral health routine that includes the use of dental floss," says Cronin. "Many people who suffer from sensitive or bleeding gums often avoid flossing because they think it will worsen their condition, but the reality is that flossing will improve the health of the gums and prevent bleeding."
