The campaign is being launched in the context of World Antibiotic Awareness Week and European Antibiotic Awareness Day, key moments to reinforce the dissemination of the message.
An iconic figure enters the scene: Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, reappears "in his lab coat" and in good spirits to remind us that his legacy cannot be lost due to misuse. The campaign depicts everyday situations in which antibiotics are misused: taking them without a prescription, interrupting treatment prematurely, sharing them with pets, or keeping them "just in case."
The key message of the National Plan Against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN) is that using antibiotics responsibly is not optional; it is vital. Antibiotic resistance poses a threat to public health, and although it may seem like a distant issue, the campaign points out that it starts at home: in how we request, how we use, and how we commit to these medications. With materials available in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, Valencian, and English, the campaign facilitates the dissemination of this message nationwide.
This year, PRAN's strategy is based on three fundamental pillars:
The PRAN calls on healthcare professionals, veterinarians, school administrators and the general public to spread the campaign's message because "Using antibiotics properly is vital."
