The PRAN and the General Council of Dentists, united against antimicrobial resistance
The National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance ( PRAN ) and the General Council of Dentists have presented today the “Proper use of antibiotics” campaign during the celebration of the General Assembly of the Collegiate Organization, which has brought together the presidents of all the colleges and provincial boards of dentists in the country.

The main purpose of this initiative is to inform dentists about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of its prevention in dental practice. To this end, several materials have been created that will support dentists in their daily professional development:

  • The “Guide to the use of antimicrobials in Dentistry”, prepared together with six scientific societies (AEDE, SECIB, SECOM and CyC, SEMO, SEOENE and SEPA) and supervised by PRAN experts, which provides key information on the use of these medications in the different areas of Dentistry. This document is designed as a practical and accessible tool for dentists, facilitating the implementation of good practices in the use of antibiotics.
  • Illustrated guide for dentists”, which includes, as a summary, the main guidelines for the use of antibiotics in the different most common oral pathologies.
  • App for IOS and Android, aimed at dentists, which will be available soon, in which you can find information on oral infections, antimicrobials commonly used in Dentistry and a decalogue on the use of these drugs in the dental profession. It can be found under the name Antimicrobial Guide in the App Store and Google Play Store.
  • Brochures and infographics , both for dentists and the general public.

Dr. Óscar Castro Reino, president of the General Council of Dentists, has declared that this campaign and the materials that have been developed are an example of the continuous commitment to public health and patient safety, promoting responsible and prudent use of antibiotics in the dental field. “We are fully aware that antimicrobial resistance is a major health problem not only in Spain, but throughout the world, and that it requires the collaboration and awareness of both prescribing professionals and the general population,” stated Dr. Castro.

Likewise, Dr. Castro has thanked the six scientific societies that have collaborated in the writing of the “Guide to the use of antimicrobials in Dentistry”, and the PRAN “for its scientific review, advice and experience, which guarantee its rigor and relevance clinic".

For his part, the PRAN coordinator in the area of human health, Antonio López, recalled that “this guide is an example of how the problem of resistance should be addressed, where health professionals, the administration, professional associations and The PRAN collaborate and jointly establish a guide with evidence-based treatment guidelines.” Furthermore, he added that "this collaboration has made it possible to guarantee harmonization between the recommendations of the Guide of the Council of Dentists and the updating of the homologous chapter of the Antimicrobial Therapeutic Guide of the SNS."

Next actions

Given the relevance that antimicrobial resistance has on the health of the population, the General Council of Dentists will present the project to the International Dental Federation, within the contents of its world congress to be held in Turkey in September 2024.

In addition, it will offer all the material to Ibero-American dental associations, and in 2025 a survey will be carried out among dental professionals in Spain, prior to the preparation of a White Paper on the use of antibiotics in the first half of 2025.
