Doctors, dentists, pharmacists and veterinarians will have specific programs for the health care of their members
The General Council of Physicians has signed a general collaboration protocol with the Dentists, Pharmacy and Veterinary Councils to support and promote the creation, coordination and implementation of a Comprehensive Care Program for Sick Healthcare Professionals, adapted to the needs of each profession, based on the experience and success of the Comprehensive Care Program for Sick Physicians (PAIME) developed by medical colleges for 25 years.

The main objective of this protocol is to promote the health care of the different health professionals based on the problems and specific circumstances of the members of each profession, in order to provide the best response in terms of promotion, prevention and health care.

Health professionals are a particularly vulnerable group in certain fields of mental health. In addition, their physical and mental well-being has been particularly affected by the pandemic, with an enormous impact in terms of mental health that, far from being reversed after the official end of the pandemic, persists and in some cases is accentuated.

For this reason, the health professions work to expand this protection, more necessary now than ever, through a comprehensive and professional response to those who support the National Health System.

The initiatives that are going to be promoted with the advice of the General Council of Physicians promote voluntary access and rehabilitation of the affected professional with very clear objectives such as helping to detect medical professionals with problems or difficulties in the field of mental health and/or addictions; provide the sick professional with a Specialized Care Program made up of a network of professionals and resources that deal with their problems, help them resolve their situation and can be recovered for the exercise of their profession with all the guarantees for them and for the target population of their work and, finally, guarantee anonymity to the sick health care provider, with complete confidentiality and professional secrecy in the care they receive through said program.

The presidents of the four General Councils, Tomás Cobo, Jesús Aguilar, Luis Alberto Calvo and Óscar Castro, promoters of this initiative, have highlighted that a program of this type guarantees citizens that their professionals care for them in the best possible conditions "because in addition to taking care of the professional, of our colleagues, we take care of the health of citizens. This is a clear example of corporate social responsibility, professional ethics and commitment to society”.

Dr. Tomás Cobo has emphasized the solvency and experience of PAIME, a "Spain brand" program and pioneer in Europe that for 25 years has obtained a 90% success rate, "which means that the profession and patients recover nine out of 10 doctors who enter this program. PAIME represents values, solidarity, vocation and commitment to our loved ones and to the whole of society, a beautiful commitment that materializes in doing what we know how to do best: caring. Now with this great step, the medical profession feels even more proud to be able to collaborate in the care not only of our colleagues but also of other key health workers for the National Health System”

Óscar Castro Reino, president of the General Council of Dentists of Spain, has declared that with this agreement “we want to recognize and value the importance of mental health in the general well-being of health professionals. In our case, dentists play a fundamental role in the oral health care of the population and often have to face a lot of pressure in their daily practice, since their work involves carrying out very delicate work while maintaining high quality standards. Likewise, it is common to care for patients who come to the consultation with fear or anxiety, which makes treatment difficult. These situations generate high levels of stress in the dentist, which can lead to burnout syndrome.and even in depression. Therefore, being part of a specific health program that facilitates access to therapists or psychologists is essential to promote their general well-being”.

The president of the General Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges has stated that "the pandemic had negative repercussions on the mental health of a good number of citizens, as reflected in the data, and of course also of pharmacists who, like the rest of the health professionals, were subjected to great healthcare pressure in the different areas of practice". In addition, Jesús Aguilar has highlighted that "pharmacists have always been on duty for our patients, and in the case of community members with a close relationship and support with patients and neighbors, offering an essential health service far beyond pharmaceutical care, being a source of certainty when there were all doubts, sadness, fear and pain. Also in hospitals with extreme and critical situations, managing the management of stocks and doing real "juggling". After this harsh pandemic, it is a good time to launch this alliance, taking the experience of doctors to go one step further and, in coordination with our Autonomous Councils and Colleges, articulate solutions for pharmacists”.

As Luis Alberto Calvo, president of the General Council of Veterinary Colleges of Spain, has pointed out, this profession is also characterized "by situations of stress, pressure and loneliness in its daily practice, sometimes in very harsh physical conditions, which end up affecting the veterinarian. For this reason, it is a very interesting initiative that we can benefit from the PAIME project after the proven experience of our colleagues in human medicine, the doctors, and that undoubtedly contributes to improving the National Health System”.
